An agri-based startup that converts farm by-products into value-added organic goods — produced and sold by rural women across Karnataka.
Suvarna Farm Foods is a sister concern company of Suvarna Hybrid Seed. Megha Patil Mangoli and Padmaja N Patil — mother and daughter — are the founders of the company. It is an expansion of their already existing agri-based family business.
"From preserving 150 varieties of vegetable seeds, we began noticing what was being wasted — and decided that nothing from nature should go to waste."
— Megha & Padmaja, FoundersAs a seed company that preserves, produces and markets more than 150 varieties of different vegetable seeds, Megha and Padmaja started recognising the wastage of fruit pulp in certain cases. Papaya pulp is wasted while extracting seeds, drumstick leaves go unutilised, marigold flower petals are discarded — all of which can be utilised for herbal tea and oil purposes.
Megha and her mother Padmaja started paying attention to this and converted these into value-added post-harvest products. Eventually many like-minded groups, Government institutions, volunteers and NGOs came together.
In collaboration with the Matangi Yojana project of Karnataka Rajya Raita Sangha, Suvarna Farm Foods is now training rural women — for production of their products and selling them via rural women in surrounding taluks.
To empower and train rural women of Karnataka to first produce and then sell our products and many others if need be under our brand name Suvarna Farm Foods — thus providing a regular and alternative source of income via the Suvarna Farm Food network, while also utilising the natural resources mindfully which otherwise would be agri-waste.
